Sunny Road Rentals is a family business that came to fruition amidst the pandemic. Why? Well, as Cody and Melia put it, the RV rental business chose them!
At the end of June last year, Melia left her teaching career. Meanwhile, Cody had been a stay at home dad, also doing electrical work on the side. At the time they say, “We knew we wanted to spend more time with our young kids and really had no idea what our jobs would be.” That was until their friends decided to sell their RVs.
Realizing that the potential profit could be the perfect source of income for the family, the Holcombes decided to take their friends’ two Class C’s off their hands. Then, in August of 2020, they listed them on Outdoorsy.
This has, of course, had its ups and downs. “More people are taking trips in RV’s because of the pandemic. Many of our customers are first time renters who canceled their trip to Hawaii or are renting an RV instead of going on their usual cruise,” the couple shares. “But at the same time, many people are canceling their RV camping and road trips because the state or national parks they want to camp in are closed or have limited availability.”
However, the pandemic hasn’t stopped Cody and Melia from growing a successful business on Outdoorsy. They’ve had 27 rentals since they started and have even added to their fleet! “We had a very successful end of summer and fall, ” they tell us, “which led us to purchase a third RV to rent in November. We are also working on getting a camper van ready to list on Outdoorsy soon.”
In the future, the Holcombes hope to expand into the Class B space and start focusing on longer trips!
