Owners of the Week: Ryan and Gabby Goodman

Last year, we saw an increased interest in the RV lifestyle. Needless to say, with that also came an increased amount of listings on Outdoorsy. One of those newly listed owners was James Ryan and Gabby Goodman of Maverick’s RV Rentals LLC!

Ryan and Gabby Goodman are a husband and wife team in Wimberly, Texas. In March of 2020, they decided to list their personal travel trailer on Outdoorsy. When we asked what inspired the two to enter into the RV rental business, Ryan said, “At first it was just to try and cover the monthly payments and insurance. We didn’t really expect much else from it. Boy, were we surprised!” After renting their 2020 Bullet Crossfire 2200BH for a few months, the side hustle turned into a business.

By September, they had a full-fledged fleet! “We’ve grown to 5 units, 4 of which are consigned, with at least one more coming to us in March 2021, and a fixer-upper we’re currently calling the Green Machine that still needs some work before it’s renter ready,” Ryan tells us.

Instead of buying more RVs to grow the fleet, Ryan turned to consignment. “I started my search of privately owned RVs sitting and collecting dust,” which he says is a win-win for everyone.

This growth wasn’t immediate, however, as the pandemic had a definite effect. “We only had 1 rental in March, 0 in April,” Ryan explains, “but in May, it started taking off.” Ever since then, they’ve had revenue incoming every month. And after the 4th and 5th RVs entered their fleet, the business was truly off to the races with 31 rentals since listing.

So, if you’re looking to get into the RV rental business, here’s Ryan’s advice:

  1. Know and understand your numbers.
  2. Don’t do this just for the money, you won’t last very long.
  3. If you’re just looking to do the bare minimum, don’t waste your time, or anyone else’s.
  4. If you care more about your renter’s experience than you do your pocketbook, then you’re in the right place.
  5. This is not a get rich quick thing. It takes work, effort, understanding, care, and strategy.

The future looks bright for Maverick’s RV Rentals as they hope to add even more consignment units to their fleet, expand to Class C and B units, and upgrade from a half-ton truck to a one-ton truck. They may even offer training and consulting for those interested in creating their own RV rental consignment business, so if you want more advice from Ryan, reach out! Their 5-star reviews and consistent growth prove that these two know what they’re doing.
