What to Do in Fredericksburg, TX

Wondering what to do in Fredericksburg, TX? You’ve come to the right place. Fredericksburg may not be the biggest town in Texas, but it is definitely one of the most charming. This adorable place boasts German roots but still offers some of that wonderful Texas spice to each and every person who passes through, making it an ideal place to visit.

Below are some of our favorite things to see and do in this amazing little Texas town.

Culinary Adventures

First, we have to mention the amazing food found in Fredericksburg. There are so many awesome culinary adventures in this town that eating is at the top of the list when it comes to what to do in Fredericksburg, TX.

Wake Up with Coffee

Of course, you will want to start each day in Fredericksburg with a cup of coffee. While you definitely can make a cup of joe in your luxury tent at Outdoorsy Hill Country, we also recommend visiting these coffee shops for a latte or espresso as well:

  • Caliche Coffee Bar & Ranch Road Roasters
  • KaffeeHaus
  • RockHaus Coffee

Delight in German Food

As mentioned above, Fredericksburg has German roots. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the town is home to a lot of German restaurants. The food served in these local eateries is authentic and top-notch, and you absolutely should make time to try a couple.

Old German Bakery & Restaurant is our favorite for breakfast. Meanwhile, Otto’s German Bistro is a good spot for lunch or dinner.

Get Spicy with Tex-Mex

No trip to Texas is complete without some Tex-Mex food. While there is a lot of German food in Fredericksburg, there are also plenty of other amazing restaurants, many of which serve up some incredible Tex-Mex dishes.

La Tequila Jalisco is a favorite of locals, and Camp Azul Mexican Grill & Bar is often touted as the best Mexican food in Fredericksburg. We also love Mamacita’s Restaurant, and for tacos, we highly recommend Taqueria Machetes.

Enjoy Texas Barbecue

Another Texas staple? Texas-style barbecue, of course! Many visitors think they need to head to Austin for some amazing barbecue, but this simply isn’t the case. Eaker Barbecue serves up smoked meats that are just as good as any of the popular spots in the big city, and Backwood BBQ is sure to curb your barbecue craving.

Wine tasting in Fredericksburg, TX

Wonderful Drink Tastings

Don’t worry! Awesome food isn’t the only thing on our list of what to do in Fredericksburg, TX. We also have to recommend the amazing adult beverages in the area. Most people know that Texas Hill Country is also Texas wine country, and the many wineries—in addition to the biergartens and meadery (more on those in a bit)—definitely make for some good times.

Hop on the 290 Wine Shuttle

If you can only go on one drink adventure while in Fredericksburg, we have to recommend hopping on the 290 Wine Shuttle to tour the wineries in the area. This shuttle picks up every 15 minutes at all of the wineries along the 290 wine trail. It runs every Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and you can visit as many wineries as you like during this time. This is an excellent way to see the wine trail in an easy, stress-free way!

Psst… We highly recommend making sure you get to the Rhinory, a winery-slash-rhino-rescue hybrid where you can taste wine, meet rhinos, and have an awesome time.

Taste Mead at The Hive Patio Bar and Meadery

Wine is wonderful, of course, but what if we told you that you can also find local mead while visiting Fredericksburg? That’s right, this little town is home to its very own meadery: The Hive Patio Bar and Meadery.

The Hive is a hidden gem of a bar located in a charming historic venue. Here you can take in live music while enjoying house-made mead, as well as a variety of other drinks. It’s an excellent place to spend a weekend evening!

Relax at Altdorf Biergarten

Finally, we have to mention Fredericksburg’s biergartens. Altdorf Biergarten is our favorite and is well worth visiting during your time in the town, especially if German brews are your thing.

This biergarten features a full menu full of German favorites, a huge selection of beers (as well as other alcoholic beverages), and on weekends live music is added into the mix. The result is a fun atmosphere that gives you a chance to unwind after a long day of exploring. And speaking of exploring…

Exciting Explorations

Okay, enough about food and drink. Next on our list of what to do in Fredericksburg, TX is the collection of amazing attractions in the town and its surrounding areas. From incredible outdoor adventures to intriguing museums, you’re sure to find some attractions that tickle your fancy.

Pick Flowers at Wildseed Farms

Texas Hill Country is one of the best places to see wildflowers during the spring and early summer. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that the area would be home to a wildflower farm. Wildseed Farms is just that farm, and it is absolutely gorgeous when its flowers are in bloom.

The best part? Unlike many wildflower farms, Wildseed Farms allows visitors to pick their flowers, meaning you can leave with a big bouquet of these beautiful blooms. (We recommend pressing them to preserve them for years to come.)

Take a Hike at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Want to spend even more time outdoors? Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is the perfect spot for getting outside and enjoying everything Mother Nature has to offer.

This gorgeous park is located just outside of Fredericksburg, meaning you can get there easily, and returning to Outdoorsy Hill Country to rest at the end of the day will be just as much of a cinch.

Hike to the top of the enchanted rock, look for tiny shrimp in the many pools scattered across the top of the rock, and listen for the groaning of the rock as the temperature warms up or cools down. We especially love enjoying a sunrise or sunset from the top of the rock!

Visit the Past at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park

Have a history buff in your travel party? If so, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is a must-visit spot.

You will have to drive a little bit outside of town to reach this NPS site, but it is well worth the drive. Here you’ll learn about the life and times of our 36th president. You can see President Johnson’s boyhood home in Johnson City, check out the Texas White House at the LBJ Ranch, and more.

We recommend starting your visit Park Headquarters and Visitor Center to get oriented.

Learn Something New at the National Museum of the Pacific War

Another great spot for history lovers, the National Museum of the Pacific War is located in Fredericksburg, and part of the museum is set in the boyhood home of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz.

As the name suggests, the museum focuses on the Pacific War, with an entire section looking at the life of Nimitz. The museum campus is large, featuring a living history section, the Nimitz home itself, a large exhibit building, a Japanese Peace Garden, and more. Make sure to budget enough time to see it all!

Step Back in Time at the Pioneer Museum

The Pioneer Museum is smaller than the place listed above, but it is still worth seeing, especially if you are interested in the German roots of the area. Here you can peek at pioneer artifacts and learn about how the pioneering spirit helped make Fredericksburg what it is today!

Fredericksburg plays host to so many awesome festivals and events that we can’t list them all in this article. Instead, we’ve chosen a few of our favorites to mention below.

Celebrate at the Bluebonnet Festival

As mentioned earlier, Texas Hill Country is an amazing place to see wildflowers in bloom. Bluebonnets are particularly prevalent and beautiful in this area, and they are the inspirations for the Fredericksburg Bluebonnet Festival.

This one-day event takes place in mid-April and features wine tasting, safari tours, live music, good food, and plenty of wildflowers!

Have a Blast at Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is the main event of the year in Fredericksburg. Considering the city’s roots, one would expect the event to be pretty amazing, and it truly does not disappoint.

Live music fills the air, German beer is on tap, German foods are around every corner, and you can even enjoy some German dancing. Honestly, we can’t think of a better way to celebrate fall, German culture, and the month of October!

Enjoy Christmas Festivities

Fredericksburg also goes all-out during the Christmas season. During this time of year, the town installs a variety of decorations, including a traditional German Christmas pyramid. It looks like a giant wooden windmill and includes cute little figures that depict Christmas scenes.

We recommend visiting the first weekend of December in order to catch the opening events and a fun Christmas parade.

Shop Farmers’ Markets

Finally, we have to mention the farmers’ markets that happen weekly in Fredericksburg. These markets feature produce, wildflowers, eggs, and a variety of locally made wares for sale. On top of all that, the markets also tend to boast live music entertainment and sometimes even wine tastings!
