When I was diagnosed with cancer we bought "The Beach House" to allow us to still safely get out of the house with our kids. My now 3-year-old and 5-year-old love the beach, exploring, adventuring and spending time outside. While I underwent chemo, we hoped to share our lovely beach house with other families or individuals looking to explore and travel. We are expecting our 3rd baby this August. We call her "The Beach House" since it has always been a dream to purchase a beach house, however the California housing market makes it a bit difficult. Now we have our beach house that we can take to all the beaches along the West Coast!

We had been wondering for some time if we would like to try “Van camping”. My wife found a van/camper (Winnebago Solis) for rent in Woodland a town close to us. We got a “How to operate” lesson from the owner who afterwards also answered all of our newbie questions. (They were quickly available for any questions that we had during our 1 week trip along the California coast) Then after packing some clothes and food stuff we drove for our first night to a State Campground at Half Moon Bay. We found out that driving the van/camper was very similar to driving our cars. Later that night going to sleep in the upstairs “Pop Out” while listening to the sounds of the ocean convinced us that we had made a right decision to try this adventure. Later, while at another RV campground, we visited the State Park called Ano Nuevo. This is where you can see the Elephant Seals. These marine animals who haul out on this beach to give birth, mate, then return to the ocean weigh 5,000 lbs! While there we got a rare treat and saw two Elephant Seal mothers give birth. Baby Elephant Seals weigh 150 lbs! Then drove a few miles south along the coast to Santa Cruz and saw the beautiful Monarch butterflies! The highlight of our trip for sure. Then we visited Monterey Bay, saw another grove filled with the Monarch butterflies, visited several different restaurants eating some exciting meals and went into the awesome “Monterey Bay Aquarium”. This is one place everyone should visit. Beautifully designed with thousands of animals exhibited with many docents to explain what you are seeing. Afterwards, we went to the “Paris Bakery” near the aquarium. My wife needed no GPS for her favorite place! Like a bee we were there in moments sampling their pastries. Last couple of nights of our week rental we were again at a state park on the coast, this one at Bodega Bay. We still had food in the van/camper and again we were able to sleep listening to the ocean. The camp host is a friend of ours who we were happy to visit with. The adventure was to travel for a week, see a lot of wildlife, see and hear the ocean. We certainly accomplished that. And along the way we were to determine if we really liked the idea of doing all this again in a van/camper. We found that we really enjoy this ease of travel. We can eat our own meals if we want, sleep with the sound of the ocean, stop whenever we wanted along the amazingly beautiful California coast but most of all we rediscovered that we really enjoyed each other’s company. Yes! Yes, we would love to do another travel adventure again in a “van/camper”!
