We built Matilda with the intention of only using her for personal use, but as we’ve explored Colorado and beyond with her it only seemed fitting that we share her with the rest of the world. Matilda is built for off-grid adventure with solar panels, battery bank, electric stove, refrigerator and freezer, tons of gear storage, and more. Here’s a little more about Matilda and what she has to offer:
- 2019 Mercedes Sprinter 3500 XD, 170” wheelbase, dual rear wheels
- Efficient 3.0 liter V6 Diesel engine gets ~22mpg highway and 18mpg combined when fully loaded
- Queen size bed. Comes with all necessary pillows, bedding, and soft wool blanket.
- Seating for four. Both front seats swivel.
- Option to add-on a 4 person ground tent with sleeping pads and sleeping bags.
- Both front seats swivel.
-Marine style table between front and rear seat enables dining for four. You can store it away while driving to create more space. Our little one sleep in her pack’n’play in this space.
- Ample DC and AC electricity provided by 200 watt solar array snd 200 amp hour battery bank
- Dometic dual zone fridge/freezer to keep your food and beverages cool. This was a huge upgrade for us compared to our yeti coolers. No more soggy food!
- Diesel heater to keep you warm year round
- Two variable speed, bi-directional fans to keep you cool and air flowing throughout the van. We also have covers for these to keep it dark at night and further insulate the van
- Dual zone dimmable lighting
- Tinted windows and curtains (designed by my wife) for added privacy

EmpfehlungenThe world is your oyster. Explore all that Colorado has to offer - campsites, dispersed camping, state and national parks, national forest land, and this list goes on. I'm here to help you find the ideal itinerary for your adventure so don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. We're big skiers, hikers, and mountain bikers and here are a few of our Colorado favorites:
- Winter Park (1.5 hrs from Denver): this winter wonderland is actually an amazing place to explore all year round. Surrounded by the Arapaho National Forest you can explore endless gravel roads and find the perfect dispersed camp site. Stock up on food and beer in town and then get lost for days.
- Crested Butte (4.25 hrs from Denver): world class skiing, hiking, and mountain biking with a charming downtown with welcoming locals and none of the crowds of the I70 mountain towns. It's my favorite place to go in Colorado. Be sure to check out the Gothic Ghost Town just outside of town. Amazing dispersed camping, hiking, biking, and fishing.
- Gunnison (4 hrs from Denver): right down the road from Crested Butte is the little college town of Gunnison where off-roading and mountain biking are favorite past times. Get wet and wild at the nearby Blue Mesa Reservoir.
- Telluride / Ouray (6 hrs from Denver): this whole area is a 4-wheelin, hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, skiing paradise. Enjoy all that the famous towns have to offer and then get lost in the beautiful San Juan Mountains.
- Silverton (6 hrs from Denver): Just down the Million Dollar Highway from Telluride and Ouray, this old mining town is a 4-wheelin mecca. ATVs are allowed to drive around town. Many of the streets are still made of dirt. The food and libations are great and the trails are right out the back door.
- Rocky Mountain National Park (1.5 hrs from Denver): only 90 minutes from Denver, this national park has so much to offer year round. Check out Chasm Lake, Trail Ridge Road, Longs Peak, Mt. Meeker, and more. There're so many dispersed and designated camping options. Then stop into town for some amazing pie at You Need Pie! in Estes Park.
- Vail (1.75 hrs from Denver): known for world class skiing (you can winter camp nearby!), but also great for the other three seasons of the year - amazing hiking, biking, camping, and more.
- Beaver Creek (2 hrs from Denver): my favorite of the Vail Resorts in Colorado - further from Denver, so fewer crowds than other resort towns. Great trails for wheelin, hiking, and biking. Great skiing in the winter.
- Breckenridge (1.5 hrs from Denver): lovely downtown area to restock on food and beverages. Tons of great trails nearby. I highly recommend Boreas Pass for its views and mining era history.
- White River National Forest (3 hrs from Denver): want to boondock and see more sheep dogs than humans? Check out this amazing National Forest in west-central Colorado.
- Steamboat Springs (3 hrs from Denver): I did a bike trip to Steamboat a few years back and it's rolling hills and mountain peaks are absolutely gorgeous all year round. A true wild west town with great fishing on the Yampa River, hiking & biking galore, world class skiing (champagne powder!), and endless dispersed and designated camping options. Oh and you have to check out the hot springs at Strawberry Hot Springs.
- Fruita (4 hrs from Denver): if you don't have the desire or time to drive all the way tot Moab, I highly recommend this little gem of a town in Grand Junction, CO. Explore the Book Cliffs range and Colorado National Monument. Bike the 18 Road trail system.
- Durango (6.5 hrs from Denver): this little town is home to a surprising number of professional athletes and Olympians and for good reason. There's boundless outdoor space for training and exploration. Check out Mesa Verde National Park, Chimney Rock National Monument, Durango Rock Shelters Archeology Site, and Spring Creek Archeological District just to name a few.
- Sand Dunes National Park (3.5 hrs from Denver): Sara and I went here for my birthday in 2019 and were blown away by the beauty, the contrast of the dunes against the Sangre de Cristo Range. Lots of camping options. I highly recommend the hot springs at Sand Dunes Swimming Pool & RV Park.
If Colorado just isn't enough, check out the beautiful wonders of Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Arizona. Also consider Nebraska and Kansas - they have more adventure to offer than you think!

My wife and I have built out two Sprinter vans over the years for personal use and really enjoyed the experience, so when our daughter was born and I wanted to take time off work to spend with her, we started TWB Works as a way to build out adventure vehicles and share them with folks to enjoy.
